Human Connections
When I went to college in the 80's I wanted to be an immigration lawyer; all of my grandparents had immigrated and my parents had accents so it seemed natural. I was the youngest of 4 and there was little high school, and no college in my family making my dream very large. When you come from a family that close to the "old country" you are more likely to do what your parents tell you, I think. When my mother told me I was to become a school teacher, I did what she said, despite my dreams. I taught school for 10 years, which I do not regret at all. And then I left that career. Which I do not regret at all.
One thing remains, however. I love human connections. Mentoring and watching people "get it" is exhilarating for me. The thing I adore most about being a BA at United is showing people how to navigate the processes. How to elicit, analyze, reason and write. How to grow their trade. How to be proud of their finished product. That is worth its weight in gold. And United has provided that opportunity, that role for me over and over again. My mood elevator is at grateful.
So would I have been happier as an Immigration Lawyer? I'll never know. But what I didn't know at 17 that I know at 47 is that the human connections in my life are what really touch me. As long as I have an opportunity to share with people I am doing just fine.
